UCLA

COACH BOB TOLEDO

Q. Do you feel that one man [Ron Dayne] beat you today?

A. “No, I don’t feel that one guy beat us. Dayne is a great back and I’m happy that he’s coming back and he’ll try to win the Heisman. My hat’s off to him, but believe me, he didn’t do it alone.”

LINEBACKER RYAN NECE

Q. What would you say went wrong with the defense today?

A. “We didn’t work on fundamentals. The coaches did a good job, but they can’t play for us.”

TACKLE KRIS FARRIS

Q. How would you assess Dayne?

A. “Dayne is the best running back in the nation.”

RECEIVER FREDDIE MITCHELL

Q. What would say about Wisconsin?

A. “All I can say is, Wisconsin was a better team than us tonight.”

WISCONSIN

COACH BARRY ALVAREZ

Q. Did you know that Ron Dayne was just one yard short of the Rose Bowl record [247 yards]?

A. “No, I didn’t. But Mike [Samuel, quarterback] was supposed to pitch.”

LINEBACKER BOB ADAMOV

Q. Tell about the finishing block you threw on cornerback Jamar Fletcher’s interception return for a touchdown. How did it evolve?

A. “I looked upfield and I saw that there was one guy left. It was [quarterback Cade] McNown. Fletcher was right behind me, and I just barreled into the guy.

GUARD BILL FERRARIO

Q. (Noting that Samuel has been a much-maligned quarterback): What would you say about Samuel’s performance today?

A. “I think he had an excellent game. He gave us excellent leadership all season and went out with a bang.”

FULLBACK CECIL MARTIN

Q. What was the team’s feeling about UCLA going into this game?

A. “We knew UCLA could put points on the board. In a game like this, you can’t ease into it. Coach kept harping on it and harping on it. We even practiced a bit different.”
