King Week to Focus on Civil Rights Leader’s Goals

A variety of festivities and ceremonies will highlight the 22nd annual King Week Festival, from Thursday through Jan. 18, sponsored by the Martin Luther King Legacy Assn., a nonprofit social service branch of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Under the theme “We Still Have a Dream,” King Week ’99 will begin with a kickoff ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Bradley Court of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, 3650 Martin Luther King Blvd. Admission is free.

Other free events throughout the week will include a gospel festival, a peace rally and a children’s art and essay awards ceremony.

An interfaith prayer breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. Jan. 13 at Holman United Methodist Church, 3320 W. Adams Blvd. in Los Angeles. Reservations are required.

“We believe that we are the keepers of King’s dream, and it is important to refocus Los Angeles on King’s life and legacy on issues of social justice,” said Genethia Hayes, executive director of the SCLC and executive vice president of the Martin Luther King Legacy Assn.

Festivities will conclude on Jan. 18 with the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Dinner Celebration, honoring people committed to social justice. The dinner will be held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, 404 S. Figueroa St. Jeffery Katzenberg, a principal of DreamWorks studios, will host.

Organizers hope to raise $500,000 for the Martin Luther King Legacy Assn.
