City officials are prepared for an overflow crowd Monday when they hold a public hearing on a controversial plan to move the Orange County High School of the Arts to a new campus on Bloomfield Avenue.

Nearly 200 people filled the high school’s performing arts center earlier this week when the Los Alamitos Unified School District held an informal hearing on the matter. District officials said that booming enrollment means the arts school must have its own campus. Plans have been in the works since 1990, but the possibility of new matching state funds have added some urgency to the project. Supporters say the current site on the high school is inadequate for the renowned arts program.

But city officials are joining many residents in protesting the new site because of the anticipated traffic. City Council members are considering a lawsuit to challenge the district’s decision not to conduct a full environmental impact study. The council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 3191 Katella Ave. For information, call: (562) 431-3538.
