Georgetown men’s basketball team, suffering through its worst season in John Thompson’s 27 years as coach, has called a “major” press conference for Friday morning.

“It is regarding coach Thompson,” men’s basketball spokesman Bill Shapland said Thursday. “In all my years here, this is most major press conference I’ve had.”

Shapland declined to elaborate.

The Hoyas are off to their worst start ever in the Big East. They are 0-4 in the conference and only one of the games was close. They are 7-6 overall, mainly due to victories over perennial non-conference patsies Thompson has made a point to schedule every year.

With the balance of the Big East schedule ahead, Georgetown appears on pace to have a losing record for the first time since a 12-14 record in 1972-73, his first year as coach in the 1972-73 season.

In the years following, Thompson turned the Hoyas into a national powerhouse, culminating with the school’s only NCAA championship in 1984. His overall record is 596-239, a .713 winning percentage, and his program gained a reputation for having its players graduate on time.
