Ex-IRS Agent Lied During Own Audit

A former Internal Revenue Service officer in Laguna Niguel has pleaded guilty to lying to federal officers who were investigating her own tax return.

In a plea agreement with prosecutors, Linda Paig, 52, admitted submitting altered documents during an audit of her 1993 return.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles said Paig lied about a series of deductions she took and failed to disclose that she had been reimbursed by her insurance company for damages to her family’s automobile.

She is to be sentenced March 29 by U.S. District Judge Ronald S.W. Lew on two counts of making a false statement to the IRS. She faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Paig could not be reached for comment late Thursday.

She worked for the IRS in Laguna Niguel from 1976 to October 1998.
