DARE Withdraws Libel Suit Against Reporter

Share

Lawyers for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE, on Thursday withdrew a $10-million libel suit against journalist Stephen Glass, who has admitted fabricating quotes and sources in negative articles he wrote about the anti-drug organization, based in Culver City.

Under a tentative settlement reached last month, Glass agreed to sit down with DARE’s lawyers to answer questions about the editing and fact-checking procedures at New Republic and Rolling Stone magazines, which published the stories.

Neither publication was named as a defendant in the original suit in Los Angeles federal court, but DARE’s attorneys have indicated that they may sue the magazines, depending on what they learn from Glass.

Attorneys for the organization could not be reached for comment late Thursday.

DARE was formed in 1983 by Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates and other law enforcement officials to steer young people away from drug use. Its education program is used in schools throughout the country.
