Former Griffin Stein to Play for New Mexico

Former Los Alamitos quarterback Sean Stein has agreed to play football at New Mexico, his father Marshall said Friday.

Stein, a second-team All-American quarterback last season, led Long Beach City College to a 10-1 record. He was named most valuable player on offense in the Mission Conference’s Northern Division.

Esperanza linebacker Barrett Woods and punter Bobby Sparks have committed to play football at colleges next season, Aztec Coach Gary Meek said.

Woods, a first-team All-Sunset League selection, will play at Cal State Northridge. Sparks has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Lanee Butler of Aliso Viejo will represent the United States as part of the national sailing team entered in the Pan American Games. Butler, 28, will compete in the Pan-Am Games, scheduled to start July 24 in Winnipeg, Canada.

Angel shortstop Gary DiSarcina and infielder Dave Hollins will join their general manager, Bill Bavasi, as speakers at the monthly Sports Newsmakers Luncheon Tuesday at the Arrowhead Pond.

The luncheon, which begins at noon, is open to the public but reservations are suggested. Cost is $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Reservations can be made by calling (714) 758-0222.
