SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 22-year-old man from the San Bernardino County community of Alta Loma was killed Sunday in Huntington Beach when his pickup truck crashed into a traffic signal pole at about 100 mph, police said.

Donald Martin was traveling westbound on Warner Avenue about 5 a.m. when his 1995 GMC pickup drifted off the roadway as it approached Algonquin Street and jumped the curb, where it sideswiped a street lamp, knocking it down, said Huntington Beach Police Lt. Tony Sollecito.

Martin’s truck careened down the sidewalk and hit the pole at the intersection.

The pole broke off at its base and landed on the truck. Martin was thrown from the vehicle, Sollecito said.

Martin, who was traveling alone, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved, and it was not known whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, Sollecito said.
