Connecticut Loss Is Third in Six Games

Alissa Murphy scored 32 points Saturday as Boston College defeated second-ranked but injury-riddled Connecticut, 78-66, before the biggest women’s college basketball crowd in Massachusetts history.

In front of a raucous crowd of 8,606, the Huskies lost for the third time in six games after starting at 13-0 and holding the No. 1 ranking most of the season. The Huskies, 16-3 overall and 9-1 in the Big East Conference, played without four of its top nine scorers.

And their leading scorer and rebounder, Svetlana Abrosimova, made only four of 20 shots and finished with 10 points and seven turnovers.

Boston College (15-3, 7-3) jumped out to a 46-28 halftime lead in ending a 16-game losing streak against Connecticut.

“Every year everybody’s been talking about how great our bench has been,” said Connecticut’s Stacy Hansmeyer. “Then you come out and perform like this. It’s very disappointing.”

No. 4 Louisiana Tech 79, Western Kentucky 65--Shaka Massey scored 20 points to help the Lady Techsters (15-2, 3-0) to the Sun Belt Conference victory over the Lady Toppers (13-4, 2-2) at Bowling Green, Ky.

Kansas 55, No. 6 Texas Tech 45--Lynn Pride scored 19 points and the Jayhawks (14-6, 4-3) limited the Lady Raiders (17-2, 6-1) to 33% shooting in the Big 12 game at Lawrence, Kan.

No. 8 Colorado State 93, Wyoming 67--Becky Hammon scored 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting and had six assists as the Rams (20-1) overpowered the Cowgirls (5-11) at Laramie, Wyo.

No. 9 Notre Dame 99, St. John’s 60--Sheila McMillen and Danielle Green scored 20 points to help the Irish (15-2, 7-2) rout the Red Storm (9-12, 4-6) in a Big East game at South Bend, Ind.

Colorado 70, No. 23 Nebraska 53--Linda Lappe scored 13 points and he Buffaloes (10-7, 3-4) held the Cornhuskers (14-5, 3-3) to 24% shooting in the second half of the Big 12 game at Boulder, Colo.

No. 25 Oregon 68, Arizona State 52--Shaquala Williams scored 16 points to help the Ducks (15-4, 6-2) to the Pacific 10 Conference victory over the Sun Devils (8-8, 2-5) at Tempe, Ariz.
