Sierra Plan

As a member of the Whiskey Creek Stakeholders’ Group, I read with interest your Jan. 18 editorial, “Wilderness for All.” It was indeed gratifying to be able to sit down with those who have different perspectives on wilderness management--be they hikers, commercial packers, mountain guides or environmentalists--and realize we all have common ground in our love for wilderness. Our efforts, however, were just a starting point toward resolving the many problems faced in wilderness management. Real success can only be measured by what happens on the ground.

The Forest Service received over 2,000 comments on the wilderness plan, from wilderness lovers and users throughout the country. The public has done its job. Now it’s time for the Forest Service to get to work and develop a new plan that will lead to needed protections on the ground, while still allowing reasonable access by all wilderness users to our treasured High Sierra.
