A 45-year-old female inmate died Friday night after having a seizure at the main county jail in Ventura, sheriff’s officials said.

The woman had been in custody for several days after being arrested in a narcotics case, according to Sheriff’s Capt. Keith Parks. Her name was withheld by officials, pending notification of her family.

The woman died shortly before 7:30 p.m. in a cell at the jail’s medical ward at the Ventura County Government Center on Victoria Avenue.

Prior to the seizure, the woman was alone in the cell, Parks said.

“She was in there because she had some medical issues, so all the staff was right there and did the whole nine yards,” Parks said.

A staff member performed CPR but failed to revive her, Parks said.

The official cause of death will be released after an autopsy today, said Mitch Breese, a county coroner’s investigator.

Sheriff’s officials declined to release information about the woman’s medical treatment, except to say that all inmates in the medical ward are under the constant care of doctors.
