Elementary Students Gear up for Dr. Seuss Writing Contest
Elementary school students tried their hand Friday at writing and illustrating stories and verse for the Dr. Seuss Language Arts Contest.
Hollywood celebrities, teachers, parents and friends gathered at Wilshire Crest Elementary School to launch the Read Across America contest, which runs through Feb. 16.
Students in kindergarten through third grades in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino counties are eligible. Prizes include a $2,500 first-place scholarship for each grade level, as well as books and gift certificates.
The Screen Actors Guild Foundation, the National Education Assn., the California Teachers Assn. and the Los Angeles Times are sponsoring the contest to help children better understand language, reading and writing.
Each school is limited to a total of four entries, one per grade level. Entries must be in English, correctly spelled and written in Seuss-style rhyme with 200 words or less.
Up to three illustrations may be used, but are not required.
