Ventura resident Heman W. Standard died Tuesday at his son’s home in Ventura following a lengthy illness. He was 85.

Standard was born June 17, 1913, to Hezzie and Maude Standard in Canton, Ill. He was raised on a farm and attended grade school and high school in Illinois, his family said.

Standard earned a master’s degree in education from Northwestern University in Illinois. He served in the Army during World War II and moved to California in 1954.

Standard taught science and was a counselor at Ventura High School in the 1950s and ‘60s. He later moved to Hawaii to teach at University High School in Honolulu.

At the time of his death, Standard was retired from teaching at Huntington Beach High School.

In 1982, at the age of 69, Standard became the senior world horseshoe pitching champion in Huntsville, Ala., his family said. He threw horseshoes until his health prevented him from doing so, his family said.

Standard is survived by a son, Howard Standard of Ventura; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

There will be no services. Ted Mayr Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
