High school students will face new restrictions next year if a task force recommendation to close campuses is approved by the school board.

Irvine Unified School District trustees will vote July 13 on a proposal to allow only seniors to leave campus during school hours. Under the plan, freshmen and sophomores would not be allowed to drive to school at all.

The attempt to restrict student driving comes after a 16-year-old sophomore at Woodbridge High School died in car accident March 25 while going out for lunch. Kristin Godfrey was in the back seat of a van when the car started hydroplaning on the wet streets, struck a utility pole and crashed.
