Carpool Lane to Be Added to Southbound Orange Freeway
Southbound lanes of the Orange Freeway will be closed for four nights next week while construction crews build a new carpool lane.
The lanes will be inaccessible between Orangethorpe Avenue and the Riverside Freeway from midnight to 5 a.m. Tuesday through Friday, Caltrans officials said. The closures will include the southbound connectors to the Riverside Freeway.
The work is part of the improvement project for the Riverside Freeway. Begun in January 1997, it will add a carpool lane in each direction along an 11 1/2-mile stretch between the Orange-Riverside freeways interchange and the Los Angeles County line.
Completion of the $180-million county-state joint project is planned for 2000. Funds come from Measure M, the half-cent sales tax approved by voters in 1990 for transportation improvements.
