Popular Orange County Beach to Remain Closed

Huntington State Beach, a popular coastal stretch in Orange County, will remain closed to the public while authorities trace the source of a bacterial contamination.

Today, authorities will take the unusual step of placing video cameras inside sewer lines leading from public restrooms to determine if sewage is leaking from the pipes, said Monica Mazur, environmental specialist at the county Department of Health.

“We’ve found elevated bacteria levels, but aren’t sure about the source. It could possibly be sewage,” Mazur said.

The same problem occurred in 1996 at nearby Bolsa Chica State Beach, and authorities used video cameras inside the sewer lines to pinpoint the problem.

The closure of Huntington State Beach began July 1 and will continue until the source of the contamination is found and eliminated, Mazur said.
