The city was pledged $750,000 for its planned community sports complex in Mile Square Park in the new state budget signed recently by Gov. Gray Davis. “The budget authorization clearly indicates that the state understands just how important this project is to our community,” Mayor John Collins said in a statement last week.

The proposed $8-million sports complex will add 23 1/2 acres to the 55-acre Fountain Valley Recreation Center, which is booked to capacity, Collins said. Ideas for the expansion include softball fields, soccer fields, a skateboard park, a children’s play area and a concession building. The project also will include a redesign of the parking lot. The federal government is still considering the city’s request for another $2.5 million for the project.
