Mighty Ducks Sign Roussel to Multiyear Contract

The Mighty Ducks on Thursday signed goalie Dominic Roussel to a multiyear contract.

Roussel was 4-5-4 as Guy Hebert’s backup last season. He had a 2.51 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage, fourth highest among goalies who played in at least 15 games.

* The Ducks will play four home exhibition games at the Arrowhead Pond.

They begin their home exhibition schedule Sept. 12 against Colorado and they will also host San Jose on Sept. 15, the Kings on Sept. 17 and Phoenix on Sept. 22.

Exhibition road games are scheduled for Sept. 11 at San Jose, Sept. 20 at the Kings, Sept. 25 at Phoenix and Sept. 27 at Colorado.

BASEBALL

Daryle Ward, who was leading the Pacific Coast League with 25 home runs through Wednesday, has been added to the league’s roster for the Triple-A All-Star game Wednesday in New Orleans.

Ward, who played at Rancho Santiago College, was added to replace Nashville’s Ivan Cruz, a starter who was promoted to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ward plays for the New Orleans Zephyrs, an affiliate of the Houston Astros.

RACQUETBALL

Brian Hawkes of Laguna Hills will defend his National Outdoor Racquetball title on July 22-25 at Golden West College.

BASKETBALL

Ben Esplin, an All-Orange Empire League player at Irvine Valley College last season, has signed to play at Colorado School of Mines, a Division II school in Golden. Esplin, a 6-foot-6 forward, averaged 16.2 points and 7.8 rebounds last season.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Irvine High has hired Fred Bosely to be lead its cross-country program, Athletic Director Erik Terry said. Bosely had been the boys’ cross-country coach.
