Two Former Rustlers on Pan Am Team
Two former Golden West College baseball players will represent the U.S. at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, this month.
Shawn Gilbert, an infielder at Albuquerque in the Dodgers’ organization, and Craig Paquette, an infielder at Norfolk (Va.) with the Mets, were named to the 24-man roster.
The Pan Am Games, played July 25-Aug. 2, are America’s qualifying tournament for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
Gilbert, primarily a shortstop, is batting .324 with 31 doubles, 19 stolen bases and 63 runs. He played last season with the Mets and Cardinals.
Paquette had major league experience in Oakland and Kansas City before joining the Mets last season. He is batting .266 with 13 home runs and 48 runs batted in.
Gilbert was at Golden West in 1985, and Paquette in 1987.
The U.S. team was selected from professional players not on current 40-man rosters.
Former Detroit Tiger Manager Buddy Bell will manage the team.
