Twelve inmates suffered minor injuries in a disturbance Saturday between African American and Latino inmates at the Peter Pitchess Detention Center’s south facility, authorities said.

“It was black versus Hispanic, and they fought for about one to two minutes,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Joan Raber.

Deputies brought the situation under control with verbal commands and pepper spray, Raber said. Of the 50 inmates involved, about 12 received minor injuries.

“The inmates had no weapons,” Raber said. “They fought with their fists and feet only.”

Saturday’s brawl marks the second race-related fight at the facility in two months. In May, 150 African American and Latino inmates were involved in a brawl that resulted in injuries to 15 people.
