A giant crane being used to build the new $400-million home of the Milwaukee Brewers collapsed onto the stadium Wednesday, killing three people and injuring five others.

The 567-foot crane fell while lifting a section of Miller Park’s retractable roof. The wind was gusting about 30 mph at the time. Fire Chief Lawrence Gardner confirmed that the victims were workers, and said further checks were being made to ensure no one else was injured. Victims’ names weren’t immediately released. A 64-year-old crane operator was in satisfactory condition with a broken hip.

The Milwaukee Brewers postponed tonight’s game at County Stadium, which is adjacent to the new stadium. Last month, several workers were injured when a steel girder collided with an aerial basket. A worker fell 60 feet from the retractable roof May 10 and was briefly hospitalized with multiple injuries. Jeff Fleming, a spokesman for the mayor’s office, said there was significant damage to the stadium would not speculate how long it set the project back.
