The Galaxy tuned up for next week’s U.S. Open Cup game against their A-League affiliate, San Diego, by shutting out their other farm club, the Orange County Zodiac, 4-0, Wednesday night before an announced crowd of 2,490 at Santa Ana Stadium.

Orange County couldn’t defeat a Division 3 team--the Carolina Dynamo--last week in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup. So it wasn’t a big surprise that the Zodiac was no match for the Galaxy, which outshot the farm club, 13-5.

“We want to see the Zodiac play well, but we also want to show people that we’re a good team,” Galaxy Coach Sigi Schmid said. “It was good to score some goals.”

The Galaxy opened the game with three starters--Carlos Hermosillo, Mauricio Cienfuegos and Simon Elliott--and Schmid subbed in starters Steve Jolley and Greg Vanney in the second half. Schmid went with three defenders and five midfielders to prepare for Tuesday’s game in San Diego.

“They have a small field like this one,” Schmid said. “We knew we had to move the ball quicker and we did.”

Hermosillo scored the first goal on an assist from Elliott in the 40th minute. Vanney scored next on an assist from Seth George, Marvin Qiujano scored the third goal and Clint Mathis made it 4-0 on a direct free kick from 20 yards away.

Midfielder Mark Chung of the New York-New Jersey MetroStars will replace injured teammate Tab Ramos at the MLS All-Star game Saturday in San Diego.

Ramos withdrew because of a leg injury. He was voted to start by the fans despite making only four regular-season starts because of a variety of injuries.
