Girl’s Death in Townhouse Fire

Re “Girl, 6, Dies in Townhouse Fire; 5 Escape,” July 10.
Your coverage of the tragic death of 6-year-old Kenee Williams, in a fire reportedly set by her obviously disturbed brother, is an example of the kind of investigative journalism that has become quite rare.
This was not only a report about the utterly senseless loss of a child.
Your diligence in interviewing so many individuals who knew or were related to the family about the issue of long-standing neglect serves as nothing less than a mandate to the Department of Children’s Services to protect these children and prevent yet another tragedy.
Those of us who work with children and families applaud your enlarging this story to highlight the fundamental child welfare concerns at its core, while remaining sensitive to the personal tragedy and loss.
We also applaud your continuing to put the department on notice, and we look forward to a follow-up story.
