Immigrant Family
Marta Garcia, the youngest child of the immigrant family portrayed in the July 17 Saturday Journal, was a student in my first period, eighth-grade English class at South Middle School in Downey. Few of the students I’ve had have possessed a greater maturity. Her smile (well shown in your photo!) at 8 a.m. helped chase the early morning blahs from my system.
After reading about her high-achieving, well-adjusted family and knowing what Marta is like, I have only one question: Why is the government making it so hard for families like the Garcias to stay here and make the U.S. a better place to live?
