At Least 3 Killed in Quake on Coast
An earthquake jolted Maheshkali Island and neighboring areas of Bangladesh’s southern coast, leaving at least three people dead and 500 injured, doctors and residents said. The quake was recorded as a magnitude 5.2 by the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo. But Press Trust of India quoted geologists in India as saying they had pegged the temblor’s strength at 4.7. Bangladesh does not possess its own seismographic equipment. Initial reports suggested that Maheshkali, a fishing island, was hardest hit. Tremors were also felt in the mainland town of Cox’s Bazar, 18 miles away. At least 500 mainly mud-and-thatch huts on Maheshkali were knocked down, residents said.
