Twin Girls Nearly Drown in Anaheim

Two 13-month-old twin girls nearly drowned in an Anaheim swimming pool Thursday evening after wandering outside when left unsupervised for a few minutes, authorities said.

Their aunt found the toddlers floating face down in the backyard swimming pool in the 500 block of South Hibiscus Way. The twins’ uncle quickly pulled them out and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation until Anaheim firefighters arrived and took over the rescue shortly after 6 p.m., said Fire Department spokeswoman Robyn Butler.

Kaley and Kiley Lopez were reported in stable condition at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Anaheim and were later transferred to Children’s Hospital of Orange County in Orange, Butler said.

The girls’ aunt, Diana Lopez, told authorities she left the girls alone for only a few minutes while checking on her husband, Rubin, who was upstairs after returning from the hospital, Butler said. When she came downstairs, she saw the back sliding glass door standing open and spotted the toddlers in the pool, Butler said. The family immediately called 911.

While the pool was fenced, the latch to the gate was broken, Butler said.

Anaheim firefighters responded to another near-drowning earlier in the day on the 100 block of Belleza Lane, when a 3-year-old boy was found floating in a backyard spa. The boy was taken to Kaiser and was reported to be in good condition, Butler said.
