Chewing Gums Recalled Over Allergy Risk

Warner-Lambert Co. said Friday it is taking Trident for Kids and Trident Advantage off the market after two children had allergic reactions after chewing the new gums, which contain a milk protein derivative.

The consumer goods and drug maker, based in Morris Plains, N.J., said the new gums contain Recaldent, an ingredient derived from milk-casein and added to strengthen teeth.

The company said it would reintroduce the gums after packaging them with warnings to people who may have milk allergies. Both products were introduced last month.

The company said Recaldent contains no lactose and would not cause a reaction in people who are lactose intolerant.

Warner-Lambert said both children recovered from their reactions.

Other Trident gums do not contain Recaldent and are unaffected by the alert.

Warner-Lambert also makes Dentyne, Chiclets and Bubblicious chewing gums.
