Police Kill Man Who Fatally Shot 2 Officers

AUSTELL, Ga. — Police killed a man who had fatally shot two SWAT team members, ending a 16-hour standoff Saturday that began with a fight between neighbors. A third officer was wounded.
Greg Smith, 40, barricaded himself and his 73-year-old mother inside their house Friday night after shooting an officer who tried to arrest him after a neighbor was assaulted in this Atlanta suburb. That officer was treated for leg and arm wounds. The standoff came to an end Saturday morning, said a Cobb County police spokesman, who added that “it was not a self-inflicted gunshot, and one can only assume that police ended the standoff.”
Smith’s mother appeared to be unharmed.
