Gov. Gray Davis

Re “Tensions Flare Between Davis and His Democrats,” July 22: Gov. Gray Davis seems to misunderstand the structure of our government. He claims that it is the Legislature’s job “to implement [his] vision” because “it was [his] vision that commanded a 20-point victory.” In the simplest terms, it is the Legislature’s job to pass laws and the governor’s job to implement and enforce those laws.

If Davis’ contention were true, we might as well get rid of the Legislature and the courts and allow him to promulgate laws as did the kings of old. Davis may be the only one who was elected statewide but this does not make him a king nor should it make the Legislature his rubber-stamp.

I always enjoy the right wing’s desperate attempts to smear the Democrats. Now that our governor has decided to require overtime after eight hours, James Robinson tells us that “employees now working more than eight hours a day but less than 40 hours a week will likely lose pay” (Column Right, July 22). Huh? Those employees will now be entitled to overtime pay. It doesn’t take advanced calculus to figure out that their paychecks will get bigger. But for Robinson, overtime pay is less money.

Column Right only had one truthful statement. At the bottom of the article it stated that the views expressed by the author are his own. They certainly are not the views of the hard-working people here in California. The restoration of overtime after eight hours’ work is what will make this the Golden State again.
