City officials asked Irvine residents who are distraught over the increasing number of overflights from John Wayne Airport to videotape planes flying over their homes. They plan to offer the tapes as evidence that they will submit to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The city has received numerous complaints from residents of Irvine, Tustin, Mission Viejo, Laguna Beach and Laguna Niguel in the last few weeks that flights from John Wayne are deviating from regular patterns and flying over their residences, said Dan Jung, senior management analyst. The calls began just after the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station was closed July 2 and the air space reserved for that facility was made available to other planes, he said, adding that FAA officials contend the air space is used only for general aviation.
