Bahais Sponsor Race Unity Event

The Ventura County Race Unity celebration will be held today in Constitution Park in Camarillo from 12:30 to 5 p.m.

Sponsored by the Bahai faith in Ventura and west Los Angeles counties, the free event promotes unity and will feature music, dance, games and performances by the Heartfriends Singers, Polynesian dancers, St. Paul’s Gospel Choir, John Barnes Jazz Quartet, L. A. Bahai Choir and the Latin band Primavera.

In addition, the Bahai communities of Ventura County invite the public to a series of “Bahai 101” introductory classes on the faith Aug. 9, 16, 23 and 30.

The one-hour sessions will be held at 7:30 p.m. at 1889 Montgomery Ave., Ventura.

After a brief description of the Bahai perspective on current events, the course will conclude with the vision that members of the faith share for the future, member Pete Quick said.

Guest Pastor to Speak at St. Paul’s

The Rev. Martha Mukangara of Zimbabwe will address St. Paul’s United Methodist Church congregation at the 10:15 a.m. service Sunday. Mukangara is the second woman to be ordained as a United Methodist pastor in the Zimbabwe conference and the first woman to be appointed as the full pastor of a local church.

Channel Islands Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Oxnard holds a college-age worship service for people ages 18 to 25 each Sunday at 7 p.m.

Vacation Bible school registration for Moorpark’s Community Christian Church is open. Bible school will be held Monday through Friday.

Bible School in Newbury Park

Vacation Bible school at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church of Newbury Park will be held Monday through Friday. The cost per child is $5. All children ages 3-12 are eligible.

The summer’s theme is “Good News at Gospel Rock.” Bible lessons, games, crafts, playtime and snacks are offered daily.

CLU to Hold Vocation Program

Young people interested in a vocation within the Lutheran Church can explore a variety of options at the eighth annual Invitation to Service at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks on Thursday through Aug. 7.

Students from late high school through college age will have a chance to explore the roles of pastor, missionary, associate in ministry, and music and youth ministries, said the Rev. Reg Schultz-Akerson of CLU, who is coordinating the event.

Young adults of Region II of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America are invited to attend the $95 event. For information, call Linda LeBlanc at 493-3936.

Guest Speaker at AME Church

Norma Solomon White will be the guest speaker at the annual Men and Women’s Day Program at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Oxnard on Aug. 8.

White, international president of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, will speak on the topic of Christ-centered men and women preparing for a new millennium. She is a retired school district administrator.

On Aug. 7, a community reception hosted by the Xi Kappa Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha will introduce White to the community at the Tower Club in Oxnard from 7 to 9 p.m.

Alpha Kappa Alpha is the first Greek letter organization established by and for African-American women.

Pastor Begins New Assignment

The Rev. Craig Brown recently began a new position as senior pastor of the United Methodist Church of Thousand Oaks.

Brown previously served as an associate pastor and youth minister in Pacific Palisades and Covina.
