Justin Volpe

I read “Officer Pleads Guilty in N.Y. Brutality Case” (May 26), regarding Officer Justin Volpe finally admitting to his heinous crime against Abner Louima. My anger only escalated when Marvyn Kornberg, Volpe’s attorney, was quoted as saying, “When you plead guilty, that’s a sufficient apology. The man is facing life in prison.”
Well, Louima’s life has been altered significantly and I would like to ask Volpe if he now feels his actions were worth it. He should have first apologized to Louima, then to the entire community of law enforcement throughout the U.S. and then to his family, whose lives he has also changed forever.
Kornberg’s remarks also deserve some scrutiny. I know one thing. His words did a disservice to Volpe and to the legal profession.

What a novel idea! Fellow police officers providing testimony about their colleague’s misdeeds. Could this become a new trend?
