Sewage Spill Forces Closure of Beach

Share

A seven-mile stretch of beach from Point Vicente to Cabrillo Beach will be closed this weekend because of an estimated 1-million-gallon sewage spill, county health officials said Thursday.

A main sewer line was snapped Wednesday when a 200- by 400-foot section of earth crumbled, sliding away from the Ocean Trails Golf Course in the 3800 block of Paseo del Mar, said Sharon Wanglin, spokeswoman for the health department.

Engineers managed to stop the spillage early Thursday by connecting a bypass, said Richard Kebabgian, a county official. But it will be months before the sewer main is completely repaired.

Sanitation experts will test the water to determine when the affected beaches will be ready to reopen, Kebabgian said.

The golf course had been scheduled to open in mid-July, said developer Robert Zuckerman.
