An Oxnard man remained in critical condition Sunday after he was severely beaten in the head during an altercation.

Raymond Sanchez, 22, was standing in front of his house in the 5400 block of Cypress Road late Saturday when he and Jose Gonzales, 19, were approached by several other men. They were challenged to a fight and fled.

The assailants caught up to Sanchez and Gonzales and used bats and sticks to assault them, authorities said.

Sanchez was driven to St. John’s Regional Medical Center and later transferred to Ventura County Medical Center, where he is in critical condition, hospital officials said.

Gonzales, who also lives in Oxnard, was also driven to St. John’s. He was treated for an injury to the back of his head and released.

No arrests have been made, but the attackers are described as males between the ages of 16 and 18.
