Stone Arrested: Movie director Oliver Stone was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence and possession of hashish, Beverly Hills Police Lt. Gary Gilmond said Friday. Stone, 52, who was arrested late Wednesday, was released from custody Thursday morning after posting $12,500 bail, Gilmond said. The director, who also has producing and writing credits, won Academy Awards for “Platoon” and “Born on the Fourth of July.” He also directed “JFK” and “Wall Street,” among other movies. Stone’s spokeswoman, Melissa Kates, had no immediate comment Friday, explaining that “Oliver is out of town and in meetings.”

MOVIES

Hollywood/China First: An adaptation of Pearl S. Buck’s 1946 novel “Pavilion of Women” is being made into a movie in a joint production between Universal Studios and Chinese partners. Universal says it’s the first such co-production involving China and a major U.S. studio. The biracial love story stars Willem Dafoe, nominated for an Oscar in “Platoon,” as a missionary doctor who falls in love with Madam Wu, a powerful aristocrat who has begun to question the morality of traditional Chinese society. Popular Chinese actress Yan Luo will play Madame Wu; she also wrote the screenplay with Paul R. Collins and is a producer. A Silver Dream Production, in association with Beijing Film Studios, the movie is being directed by Yim Ho of Hong Kong. Buck won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1938.

TELEVISION

ABC New Year: ABC will ring in the millennium with a live, 22-hour broadcast beginning on the morning of Dec. 31. The program, to be spearheaded by ABC’s news division, will be anchored by Peter Jennings from the network’s new studio overlooking New York’s Times Square. A version of Dick Clark’s annual “Rockin’ New Year’s Eve” will also be incorporated into the broadcast. Gary Smith, who produced President Clinton’s 1993 and 1997 inaugural galas, will produce the ABC program.

PEOPLE

They Won’t Forget: Lifetime achievement awards will be presented to a score of writers and families whose lives and careers were disrupted and destroyed by the Hollywood blacklist of the 1950s. The event--”The Hollywood Blacklist: We Will Never Forget”--will take place Monday night at UCLA during this year’s “Screenwriting Showcase” awards presentation to graduate students in screenwriting. “It’s hard for students in the safety of UCLA’s screenwriting program to understand the hell their predecessors went through--the not-too-distant hell where American artists were jailed or forced into personal and professional exile because of their political views,” explained Rita Augustine, producer of the event and a graduate student who last year was among the showcase winners. Among the lifetime achievement honorees are blacklisted writer Joan Scott (“Cairo”), widow of another blacklisted writer, Adrian Scott (“Mr. Lucky”); the late Waldo Salt (“The Philadelphia Story”); and the late Dalton Trumbo (“Roman Holiday”).

POP/ROCK

‘Loca’ for Ricky: Fans who have gone loca--meaning crazy--for Ricky Martin flooded the plaza at Rockefeller Center on Friday as he performed on NBC’s “Today” show. Screams and cheers ricocheted around the buildings surrounding the plaza and into adjoining streets when Martin entered the outdoor stage and launched into his famous song, “Livin’ la Vida Loca”--Spanglish for living the crazy life. Some fans saw nothing crazy about camping out overnight to catch his performance. Among them were Cindy Dunn and daughter Victoria of Memphis. “It’s something spontaneous to do with my daughter that we’ll both remember always,” said Dunn, who found her spot at about 9 p.m. Thursday. “He’s cute, he’s nice,” said Victoria, 12. “He sings good too.”

Lauryn Says, ‘Believe in Yourself’: When opportunity knocks, answer with open arms, hip-hop diva Lauryn Hill told students at her former high school in Maplewood, N.J., this week. “I want you all to know that there are vast opportunities you can tap into. You just have to believe in yourself and start to do it. Do what you have to, to increase your mind,” the singer said at an unannounced appearance this week at Columbia High School to be inducted into its hall of fame. Hill, who won five Grammys this year, delighted students with impromptu a cappella versions of her songs “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and “Ex-Factor.”
