at Cleveland 4 PDT

* Site--Gund Arena, Cleveland.

* Records--Sparks 1-0, Rockers 0-1.

* Update--After the most impressive win in their three-season history, the Sparks now focus their attention on the wreckage of what used to be the Cleveland Rockers, 1998 Eastern Conference champions. The Sparks routed Sacramento in their Forum opener Thursday, 100-78; the Rockers were flattened in New York by the Liberty, 87-60. The Rockers are reeling. Mainstay center Janice Braxton retired in the off-season. Then Isabelle Fijalkowski of France, the WNBA’s sixth-best rebounder last summer, decided to remain in Europe this season, though the Rockers are trying to lure her back. The league’s best three-point shooter, Eva Nemcova of the Czech Republic, reported from the European championships Wednesday and will play tonight. And Cleveland’s remaining best player, guard Suzie McConnell Serio, played poorly at New York in her first game. The Rockers committed 30 turnovers in New York. Meanwhile, the Sparks begin their five-city trip seemingly in peak form. All of Coach Orlando Woolridge’s four draft picks played major roles in the win over the Monarchs, and the Sparks’ defensive pressure forced 25 turnovers. Cleveland cut rookie guard Kellie Jolly Harper on Friday.
