Re “Theater Owners Plan ID Checks at R-Rated Movies,” June 9: This might be the perfect time for the MPAA to finally utilize the hamstrung NC-17 rating for certain cases of violence in the same way the X rating was used years ago for films like “A Clockwork Orange.” However, they will need the cooperation of the many daily newspapers and media outlets that refuse to run ads for NC-17 films, which is why that potentially meaningful rating has been so strenuously avoided by the film industry. The responsibility for protecting impressionable youth from violence is not only up to the movie industry.
