Reporters in the Washington bureau of The Times have won two of the National Press Club’s eight awards for excellence in newspaper journalism, the club announced Tuesday.

David Willman won the consumer journalism award for a series of articles on Rezulin, a diabetes drug that the Food and Drug Administration approved on a “fast-track” basis despite evidence that it can cause fatal liver damage.

Jim Mann won the Edwin M. Hood Award for diplomatic correspondence for his articles and columns analyzing U.S. relations with China and other Asian countries. Mann, a former Beijing correspondent for The Times, writes a column that appears in the newspaper every Wednesday.

Both reporters have won other national awards for the same work. Willman’s work on Rezulin, which prompted the FDA to reassess the drug’s safety, won a medal from Investigative Reporters and Editors, an organization of investigative journalists. Mann’s work on Asia won Georgetown University’s Edward Weintal Prize for diplomatic reporting.
