Bullfrogs Host Dallas in Roller Hockey

The Bullfrogs host Dallas at the Arrowhead Pond at 7 tonight in a Roller Hockey International game. The Bullfrogs (2-1-1) beat the Stallions (0-4) last week at the Pond, 11-4.

Anaheim lost its season opener, then won twice before a 12-11 shootout loss Friday to Western Conference-leading San Jose. Hugo Belanger has a team-high nine goals for the Bullfrogs.

Friday, Anaheim will host Minnesota.

WATER POLO

* U.S. Water Polo announced the men’s and women’s teams for the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, and the men’s roster for the World University Games in Spain.

The Pan Am games start July 22 and are the Olympic qualifying tournament in men’s water polo. The World University games begin July 2.

Local players named to the men’s 13-man Pan Am roster are Gavin Arroyo (Villa Park High/California), Dan Hackett (Irvine/UCLA), Ryan Bailey (UC Irvine), Chris Oeding (Corona del Mar/California) and Jeremy Pope (Golden West College/Stanford).

Named to the World University games roster are Brian Heifferon (Servite/Stanford), Daniel Klatt (UC Irvine) and Jeff Powers (UC Irvine).

Among those on the women’s team are Julie Swail (Valencia/UC San Diego) and Bernice Orwig (Savanna/Cypress College/USC).

The men’s national team coach is John Vargas, who coaches the boys’ team at Corona del Mar High.

* Guy Souza has resigned as varsity boys’ coach at Mission Viejo High. Souza coached one season, and left to pursue a full-time job.

SOCCER

* The Zodiac will host an international match on July 3, when Pumas Unam of the Mexican First Division arrives for a 7:30 p.m. game at Santa Ana Stadium.

* The German-American Club of Orange County will hold a reception for the German women’s national soccer team at 8:30 tonight at the Phoenix Club, 1340 S. Sanderson Ave., Anaheim.

Germany will meet Italy in a first-round game of the World Cup at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Rose Bowl.

ACADEMICS

* The Big West Conference announced its all-academic team for the spring season earlier this month. The list, which honors athletes from baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and field, included 17 athletes from UC Irvine, 13 from Cal State Fullerton and eight others who went to high school in Orange County.

To be eligible for the team, student-athletes have to maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average, have attained sophomore standing academically and competed in at least 50% of their team’s contests.
