El Toro Rec Facilities Will Stay Open

Share

Military officials signed an interim lease Friday to allow uninterrupted use of recreation facilities at El Toro Marine base after the military leaves July 2. Orange County supervisors approved the lease last week.

Facilities to remain open to the public after base closure are the golf course, horse stables, officer’s club, child development center, indoor pool and recreational vehicle storage.

The three-vote board majority supporting conversion of El Toro to an international airport had hoped to begin flights by cargo carriers at the base on July 3. But South County cities’ continued opposition to an airport has postponed the start of aviation uses at the base until next year at the earliest.
