Portenga Drives to Victory in Irwindale 250 Winston West Race

Steve Portenga of Sparks, Nev., won the Irwindale 250 NASCAR Winston West race Saturday night at Irwindale Speedway.

Butch Gilliland of Chino Hills, who was the pole-sitter at a speed of 100.72 mph, finished third.

Escondido’s Steve Smith won the 50-lap Ultra Wheels Spec Truck race.

On Friday, Doug McComb of Thousand Oaks held off T.K. Karvasek in the final laps to win his first NASCAR Super Stock feature of the season.

Whittier’s Greg Benner was third, the best finish of his career. Points leader Mike Price of San Pedro finished fourth. He holds a 48-point lead over Karvasek, 406-358.

Rip Michels of Mission Hills won his fifth NASCAR Grand Am Modifieds race.

Michels had a six-second lead when Robert Rice and Gerry Mielke tangled in turn four of the final lap. On the lap 30 restart, Michels pulled away from eventual second-place finisher Mike Ayers.
