Conservationist Richard Moretti, who opened the nation’s only sea turtle hospital in Florida, will pick up an Environmentalist of the Year award July 30 when the Surf Industry Manufacturers’ Assn.’s Environmental Fund holds its Waterman’s Ball at the Ritz Carlton in Dana Point.

The group, which holds the gala annually to raise money for environmental groups, will also honor surfing legend Gerry Lopez, an Oregon resident.

The bash gives low-key surfers a chance to flaunt their fashion sense, which has at times produced unique ensembles.

Since its inception in 1989, the fund-raiser’s annual auction has raised more than $2 million for ocean preservation projects.
