In his first rehabilitation start since elbow surgery last June, Boston’s Ramon Martinez threw 33 pitches and struck out three in two hitless and walk-free innings against class-A Lowell. The Red Sox hope he can be activated soon after the All-Star game July 13.

Baltimore second baseman Delino DeShields was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained hamstring. He is hitting .274 in 55 games. . . . Toronto released former Angel third baseman Dave Hollins.
