Movies Contribute to Summer’s Soundtrack

The Backstreet Boys are still No. 1, but the sounds of summer movies are making their mark on the nation’s album charts this week as three film soundtracks crowd the Top 10.

“Wild Wild West,” the western-adventure starring Will Smith and Kevin Kline, led the way by debuting this week with 215,000 copies sold to land at No. 4, one spot ahead of “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” which sold 162,000 units. “Tarzan,” the animated Disney film, meanwhile, climbed 20 notches in its second week on the chart to finish at No. 10 with 110,000 sold, according to SoundScan.

Those three soundtracks, which feature new songs from artists including Smith, Madonna and Phil Collins, add to the recent chart history of strong-selling soundtracks--a genre that has become a major focus in the music industry.

The top debut of the week was Sarah McLachlan’s live collection, “Mirrorball,” which sold 221,000 and logged in at No. 3, behind chart leaders the Backstreet Boys and Ricky Martin.

The Backstreet Boys were No. 1 for the fifth consecutive week, selling 338,000 copies of their sophomore album, “Millennium,” to push its total sales past 2.9 million.

The top single in the country for the fifth straight week is “If You Had My Love” by Jennifer Lopez.
