Steve Conway, 16, of Dove Canyon survived six bogeys in the first 10 holes and defeated John Wardrup of San Diego, 3 and 1, in the first round of match play in the California Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Conway, a senior-to-be at Santa Margarita High, birdied the par-3 17th to close out the match.

Kemp Richardson of Laguna Niguel lost to 17-year-old Tom Johnson of Fair Oaks, 6 and 4.

Jason Gross of San Clemente lost to 1996 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion Tim Hogarth of Chatsworth, 7 and 6.

Nancy Lopez withdrew from this week’s LPGA Championship in Wilmington, Del., and will have surgery to remove torn cartilage from her right knee. Lopez, who wore a knee brace in the U.S. Women’s Open earlier this month and missed the cut, is not expected to play on the tour for one month.
