The Child and Family Guidance Center raised more than $140,000 for troubled, abused and neglected children at its annual Humanitarian Dinner Dance and Auction June 3 at the Beverly Hills Hotel. About 300 people attended the event, at which Deanne Tilton Durfee, Dr. Michael Durfee and the Los Angeles Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect, or ICAN, were honored. Deanne Tilton Durfee is executive director of the council and Dr. Michael Durfee is director of Child Abuse and Prevention and Treatment of the Los Angeles Department of Health Services. They have both worked to improve the lives of abused, neglected and at-risk children. Wink Martindale emceed the evening, and France Nuyen was honorary co-chair. Guests included California first lady Sharon Davis, Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti and actress Lindsay Wagner, the ICAN Associates honorary chair. Entertainment was provided in the form of a dance performance by Cate Caplin and Vernon Willet and singing by Brenda Doumani and Cyndi James Gossett. Corporate sponsors included Anheuser Busch, the Argus Group, Bank of America, Boeing, L.A. Daily News, ICAN Associates, the Los Angeles Times and Sharon Horowitz Interior Designs. The Child and Family Guidance Center has several facilities in and around Los Angeles, including two residential homes and a school for severely emotionally disturbed students. ICAN is Los Angeles County’s coordinating body for child abuse services.

* The Anti-Defamation League’s fifth annual Women of Achievement Dinner raised more than $100,000 and honored four women. About 450 people attended the May 25 dinner at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. Honored for their achievements were Wanda K. Denon-Low, vice president and general counsel of Hughes Space & Communications Co.; Bonnie G. Hill, vice president of Times Mirror Co., president and chief executive of the Times Mirror Foundation and senior vice president of communications and public affairs of the Los Angeles Times; Joyce Rey, executive director of Previews, the estates division for the Coldwell Banker Jon Douglas Co. and co-founder of Rodeo Realty; and Lillian Zacky, spokeswoman for poultry distributor Zacky Farms. The women were presented with Deborah Awards. Jane Applegate, syndicated columnist, author, commentator and a business and economic expert, was the keynote speaker. Grazyna Simon and Ruth Moss co-chaired the event. The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, works to combat prejudice, bigotry, anti-Semitism and discrimination.

* Runners honored the memory of Olympic gold medalist Florence Griffith Joyner and raised $96,000 at the inaugural Flo-Jo Memorial Half Marathon & Leisure World 5K on May 31. Olympian Al Joyner, widower of Florence, their daughter, Mary, and 2,585 professional and amateur athletes participated in the run at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills. Proceeds were split between the Flo-Jo Memorial Community Empowerment Foundation and the medical center. In addition to the half-marathon, activities included the Leisure World 5K Run/Walk and 5K Junior/Senior Relay, the Mary Joyner Children’s Race, the Bernice E. Tutt Diaper Dash, and the Corporate and Community Bed Race.

* AIDS Project Los Angeles honored Tom Ford of Gucci, Janet Jackson and Time Warner Chief Executive Gerald Levin for their contributions in the fight against AIDS at the Life XI fund-raiser May 27. Celebrity presenters included Warren Beatty, Brendan Fraser and Jeffrey Katzenberg. Rupert Everett made a surprise appearance and a speech on the continuing AIDS epidemic. Other celebrities included Annette Bening, Kathy Najimy, Beth Broderick and Carole Bayer Sager. The event, held at the Universal Amphitheatre in Universal City, raised $2 million to fund the more than 30 services AIDS Project L.A. provides to more than 8,000 women, men and children in Los Angeles County. Nathan Lane emceed the event, attended by 4,000.

* More than 150 people including Sylvester Stallone and his wife, Jennifer Flavin Stallone, helped raise more than $10,000 for the Heart of a Child Foundation at a May 27 fashion show hosted by St. John Inc. at its Beverly Hills boutique. The Stallones have actively supported the organization since their daughter, Sophia Rose, was treated for a congenital heart defect as an infant. Flavin Stallone and Deanna Martin, daughter of late actor-singer Dean Martin, helped model a collection of casual, career and evening wear. The Heart of a Child Foundation funds research into the causes of congenital heart defects and works to improve treatment and care.
