Four students from Ensign Intermediate School were caught stealing beer during a recent school trip to Washington, D.C., and have been transferred to other schools for the spring semester, district officials said. The transfers were in keeping with Newport-Mesa Unified’s zero-tolerance policy.

The students stole beer from a snack shop in the Smithsonian Institution but were caught before they could drink it, officials said. About 100 students went on the annual trip to see the workings of the government, chaperoned by teachers and parents.

Three of the students have been transferred to Corona del Mar High School; the fourth is at Costa Mesa High. Students will be able to return to Ensign after 90 days.
