Trail Blazers Go Extra Mile in Outlasting Jazz, 102-100

Rasheed Wallace scored 22 points and made two free throws with 17 seconds left in the second overtime Tuesday night as the Portland Trail Blazers fought off the Utah Jazz, 102-100, at Portland, Ore.

Portland prevailed in the matchup of the teams with the two best records in the NBA, improving to 6-0 at home and 10-3 overall. The Jazz dropped to 11-3, their only losses coming on the road.

After Wallace’s free throws, Utah’s Greg Foster got the ball near the basket, but couldn’t get out of traffic. He was called for traveling with 3.2 seconds left. The Trail Blazers’ Damon Stoudamire was fouled and made one of two free throws, giving Utah a chance to win with a three-point basket.

After a timeout, Isaiah Rider tipped away the inbounds pass as time ran out,

Rider scored five points in a row during a key stretch of the second overtime.

Miami 85, New York 84--Patrick Ewing scored a season-high 31 points, but missed a 14-foot jump shot as time ran out in overtime at Miami.

Alonzo Mourning had 28 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots for the Heat.

Ewing had 16 rebounds and six blocks. But he missed two shots and committed a turnover in the final two minutes of regulation, then missed the potential game-winning jump shot.

Indiana 88, Denver 81--Reggie Miller scored eight of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and the Pacers held the Nuggets without a field goal for more than seven minutes in the quarter at Indianapolis.

It was Denver’s seventh consecutive road loss and its seventh loss in a row to Indiana, which used a 16-1 run to clinch the win.

Denver got a season-high 28 points from Nick Van Exel.

Minnesota 89, Golden State 78--Staring at a possible four-game losing streak, the Timberwolves rallied from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit at Minneapolis.

Kevin Garnett scored 27 points and Stephon Marbury had 13 of his 19 in the fourth quarter as the Timberwolves used a 13-0 run to build a 74-69 lead.

San Antonio 99, Houston 82--Tim Duncan had 23 points and 14 rebounds and a former Rocket helped the Spurs beat his old team at Houston.

The Spurs permitted the Rockets only two brief early leads and sped to a 53-37 halftime edge, led by former Rocket guard Mario Elie, who had 15 first-half points, but sat out the second half because of a strained left hamstring.

Sacramento 111, Vancouver 101--Chris Webber scored a season-high 36 points and pulled down 17 rebounds at Vancouver, Canada, as the Grizzlies lost their fourth in a row.

Milwaukee 94, New Jersey 86--Glenn Robinson scored eight of his 18 points in the final 2:49 as the Bucks scored 11 of the last 13 points at East Rutherford, N.J.

The Nets, who lost for the seventh time in eight games and fell to 3-11, trailed by 19 in the first half, but rallied to take an 84-83 lead on Eric Murdock’s three-point basket with 3:03 to play.

Detroit 108, Chicago 78--The Pistons handed the Bulls their worst loss at the United Center. The previous low was an 18-point loss to Philadelphia last week.

Before this season, the Bulls (4-11) hadn’t lost by more than 14 at home.

Cleveland 116, Boston 99--Shawn Kemp scored 22 points and Bob Sura added a season-high 19 points at Cleveland as the Cavaliers broke the 100-point mark for the first time.

Cleveland shot 58.1% from the field only one night after making a franchise-low 21 field goals on 29.6% shooting in a loss at New York.

Washington 97, Atlanta 77--The Wizards ended a four-game losing streak as Mitch Richmond scored 28 points at Atlanta.

Juwan Howard added 20 points and Rod Strickland had 18 as the Wizards shot 42 for 71 (59%) from the field.
