Deaf Studies Students Headed for Competition
After months of studying history, popular culture, mathematics, literature, computer literacy and deaf studies, four Burbank High School students leave today to compete in the second annual Gallaudet University Western Region Academic Bowl in Oregon.
Burbank High placed second last year in the regional competition.
This year’s team members--juniors Ginnina Miglia, Siovash Hedayati, Laurel Hartman and senior Fatimah Aziz--will match wits with students from eight schools for the deaf from California, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, Colorado and Oregon.
The competition will be at the Oregon School for the Deaf in Salem.
The winning team, which will be announced at a weekend awards ceremony, will compete in the national championship April 26 at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.
The students belong to the Burbank Unified School District’s TRIPOD Model School Program, which helps deaf and hard-of-hearing students, who use sign and spoken language, learn side by side with their hearing peers. The program serves students from infancy through high school.
Burbank school officials said 14 school districts nationwide have duplicated the TRIPOD program, which started in 1993.
