Women Honored at College This Month

Share

Throughout March, Moorpark College will commemorate Women’s History Month with presentations and lectures on famous U.S. women, as well as their roles in history and today’s society.

The programs will be held at the college’s Mary Baird Women’s Center.

In addition, a wall display illustrating the adoption of the goddess Isis by different cultures will be at the center from Wednesday through April.

“This month is a time [for women] to direct themselves to activities so they can get a sense of who we are,” said Danita Redd, a professor of counseling at Moorpark College.

“It’s important for them to get to know their place and contributions to this society.”

Diane Lussier, a staff member at the center, said the college has organized similar events for more than 20 years.

The presentations begin March 16 with a video of Dorothy Dandridge, a black film star from the 1950s, to be hosted by Redd. Redd also will host a video on jazz singer Billy Holiday on March 23.

Moorpark College counselor Mary Martin will speak March 18 about the pioneer women of the 19th century.

Ofelia Romero-Motlagh will speak March 25 about success as it is defined by Mexican-American women.
